Globe Trotters
A certain globe trotter, who has lately been round New Zealand has written to the Auckland Herald complaining of the extortionate charges levied in' the Hot Lake district, and concludes his effusion by saving "my pleasant memories of thio delightful land will always be mingled with bitterness at what I cannot help looking upon as unjustifiable extortion," If j the New Zealanders are extortioners,] and we admit those in the Taupo district have been educated to extort heavy fees by the tourists themselves, they have a certain grandeur in their Bin which precludes anything so con«= temptdble as the following instance quoted from an English paper the PietorabWdrld, o£ August 1 lth, 1 887, under the heading oE "Sketches at iydford" we find the following :— # "Kingsiey considered the situation of this bridge the wildest and most romantic in the county. Near the bridge is a most picturesque fall, knojnrn as Kitts steps: Lydford casC!deis : nigter (about 100 feet) but is m >re artificial, the water being turned on to order from a mill leat above.
