The Defence Force

The following return shows the Amounts appropriated during the past three years for the Militia and Volunteers, Permanent Militia (formerly 'Field Forcp, A.C.), stores and miscellaneous. From this return it will be seen that the appropriation in gross £1 19,363 for the year 1883-4 had fallen to £89,435 in 1886-7 a decrease of £29,928. It is estimated this year to amount to £88,098. It is noticeAble that the above saving kas been made by the reduction of the Field Force from 625, as it was in 1883, of all ranks to 350, at which total the Permanent Militia now stands, and Augmenting the Volunteer Force by £000 men:—
