A Solicitor in Trouble

Some sensation was caused by the statement that an affidavit had been filed in the Supreme Court to have the name of a well-known solicitor struck off the rolls. The affidavit set forth that the lawyer had left England with £60,000 trust money, and had been struck off the English roll, and was now practising in Auckland under an assumed name. 1 Rigby, the lawyer in question, admits that the name of Bigby is assumed, and that his real name is iJramwell, and explains the circumstances of changing it as follows : — ln 1861 he had au extensive practice m the North of England as a solicitor. He became a director in several companies and invested money in them. He was ; sole proprietor of two large cotton milk in the neighborhood of Manchester, but as a result of the depression he suffered heavy losses, ultimatelyJsling with heavy , liabilities. All his debts were honorably incurred and his personal losses amounted to £50,000. On the advice of his friends he came to the colonies to endeavor t» retrieve his position, and has been resid- . ing m Auckland for the past three years. He says he changed his name in order to better his chance. He denies his name ' was struck off the roll at Home. It csased to appear because of having come , to the colony he neglected te take out his annual certificate.
