Mr Wilson moved, That a committee be appointed with power to call for persons and papers to enquire (1) H the present large expenditure on education can be reduced without unduly impairing the efficiency of the present system, or closisg country schools? (2) In what direction, if any, any reduction should take' place ? And (3) to inquire generally into the working: of the sy&tem, the committee to consist of the Hon. Mr Fisher, and MessrsAllen, Beetham, Loughrey, M. J.B. Mackenzie, Ormond, Barren, Walker, Dr Fitehett, and the mover—to report within a month. Mr Seddon moved an amendment, referring to the committee, the question whether Stot > aid can be given given to denominational schools ia large centres without injuring th* State system ; or whether it is advisable that the Bible should be read in schools. i - r A long discussion ensued, and ultimately the amendment was carried by 38 to 36. HO9PITAXS AND GHABTXABLB ATJD. Mr Macarthur moved the second realingof the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act Amendment Bill. He explained that the bill was to constitute the Manawatu and Waimate Hospital Districts, and to separate the Ashburton district from South: Canterbury. The principle of th» bill was simply to give local control of the hospital funds to those most interested. The Hon. Mr Hislop, and Messrs Ballance, Wilson, and Captain Bus- . sell supported the Bill. - dir John Hall, and Mesara Rhodes, Turnbull, and Dr Hodginson opposed theßiii. ■;.:■ The Becond reading was carried by 47 to 24. The second reading of the LawPractitioners Bill was carried by 57 * to 15i on the motion of Sir G. Grey. The Minister for Public Work* moved the second reading of th* Hammond Fencing Claims Compensation Bill, the object of which is to provide that the Minister shall inaintain fences on either tide of the railway where it passes through the laud of Mr Richard Ha amond, at Martoov The motion for second reading: was carried by 44 to 22. : The BUI was then committed (the* Minister having stated in introducing the Bill that it- was • a matter of " urgency) and passed through all it* stages. •■•:'•■ .
