The weather was magnificent, and there was a large attendance of the public, iheir Excellencies Sir Henry Loch and 3x>rd Carrington and other vice*regal visitors were present. The following mre the results :— Melbourne Stakes, 1 J miles. — Silvermine, 1; Dunlop, 2; Algerian, 3. "Won by a neck. Time, 2min. 13£h6c. Hotham Handicap.— The Levite, .1 ; Menottt, 2 ; Keith, 3. Spade Guinea and others also started. ". Maribynong Plate. — Lonsdale, 1 ; .Consequence, 2 ; Lady Betty, 3. ' Y.R.O. Debby ; one mile and a half. The Australian Peer . . . . I Abercom t Niagara . . . . • • • - t A Bplendid start wae effected at the first attempt, Lava, Abercom, Tranter, Pakeha, Jebusite getting away first. Lava went' away with the lead in the interest of Abereorn, and maintained it to the bridge, where she was four lengths ahead of the field. As they approached the sheds Abercom run up to Lava, and passing her in a few strides assumed command, having The Australian Peer in close attendance upon him. Abercom continued to lead into the straight, and at the distance post he was only a neck in front of The Australian Peer, and \ Niagara on the outside was at the lbtterV girths : Tranter, too, was coming in fast. Opposite the stand The Australian Peer made a desperate rush, and getting even with the favorite a hundred yards from the post, managed to beat him by a clear length, Niagara and Abercom running & dead heat for second place. Tranter was fourth, Lava fifth, Pakeha. sixth, with The Jebusite last. Time, 2 mm. 40&ec. idBXBOVBirB, October 30. In the race for the Derby yesterday Tranter, when rounding the turn at the bottom of the straight, came on to his knees. Niagara, while at the back of the course, tried to bolt. The win of Australian Peer is a bad one for the ring, as he had been backed heavily in the doubles by the Sydney division. Mr Gannon, the owner of him, wins Ll 1,000, and stands well about Australian Peer for the double event. October 31. On Sunday Recall did a mile and a half in splendid style in 2miu. 43£ sec. This morning Escutcheon and Kemus ■did a very good mile, and Thunderbolt was sent once round fast. Silver Prince and Enfilade took moderate ererciselonly. Abercom did half-pace york, and Algerian went once rorind sat 'top speed. Cranbrook, Trident, and Dunlop did nothing of importance, fiilverniiue and Niagara went freely and finished their work fresh. Recall did gentle work. Oakleigh did the best gallop of all the horses out. The Australian Peer merely cantered and Frisco was not extended. Tranter went a mile and a half in 2min 50sec. Pakeha was sent once round at a good fipeed. Meteor arrives this afternoon. Affluence is not likely to see the post. v Oakleigh, Australian Peer, and Tranter should provide the winner, the first named for choice. There was a large attendance at Tattergall'sthis evening, when a large amount J ofh business transacted, Algerian, Australian Peer, Meteor, and Oakleigh receiving mostsupport. The following horses were supported for the amounts named:— Meteor and Pakeha, L 600 0; Tranter and Niagara, LdOOO ; Silvermine and Recall, L4O0O ; Remus and Cranbrook L3OOO ; Dunlop, L 200 0; Silver Prince is friendless. Yesterday afternoon Oakleigh fell head over heels on the training ground, but got up and walked away all right. The weather is fine. The city is full of visitors. Trident, Enfilade, Escutcheon, and Jebuste, are not likely to start for the Cup. The winner ought to be found among Meteor, Oakleigh, Remus, Silver Prince, and Algerian.
