(PBS UWITBD PBBSS ASSOCIATION.) Chbistchwbch, October 31. About 7.30 a.m. to-day, Michael O'Brien, a platelayer, was killed on t> c the railway between the Christchurch ■tatioa and the gasworks road. It saw his duty to examine, the line, and while doing io he was knocked down br the engine of the South bridge tram, which, with its fear tracks, passed over him, killing him instantly. The driver whistled when starting, but apparently the de« ceased did net here it. The body was terribly mangled, the entrails being strewn along the line for half a chain. He was a married man, with six children. A special Police Court was held to da j before (J. Whitefoord, R.M., and R. Western I*,1 *, J. P., to he»r the charge of murder at Little Hirer against Nils Jacobsen. Nothing fresh transpired in the evidence, and the accused was form ally committed for trial. WAHttANUi, October, 31. A man named Joseph William Jones, residing at Arami ho, was arrested to-day on a charge of criminally assaulting a girl 10 years of age. The prisoner is a married man with a family. Auckland, October 31. The acitntion for carrying the Narth Island Main Trunk Railway by the Taranaki route is being vigorously prove outed. Mr Nathan, chairman or the Auckland Chamber ot Commerce, ha I telegraphed to Mr Bnjley, chairman of ihe Taranaki County Council, stating that the Auckland petition on the subject has received 4000 signatures, and suggesting that a like petition he got up in Taranaki.
