Bryce's Farewell Speech.
Wanganui, October 3.
The official declaration of the Wai' totara poll took place at Waverley to-day, both Messrs Hutchison and Bryce being present. Mr Bryce, taking a farewell of his eld constituents* spoke as follows :— ♦♦ I desire to take ■■''* advantage of the present opportunity --'■; to say : a few %ord» to the electors of '• ] this district: > With the return of my hearty thanks to -the electors of this 7, district, which ! has returned me; bo '\ often as its member, I do not think the electors have ever had real cause to be ashamed of me, and 1 1 know I have of ten felt proud of my constituents. I wish also to acknowledge with my warmest thanks the manner in which my friends have stood by me in the late contest; I have -felt their kindness very much, and let me say to them that, though beaten, we arenot disgraced. Some defeats are mor» honorable; than some victories, an 4 this may be one «f them. As to those- '. electors who have gone against me in this election on ; general or public : grounds, I; hope we part in. friendship- : I shall endeavor to retain their respect as a private settler, even though I have lost theif confidence. As a public man I have no right to complain of their Action, and I assure you I have not the least disposition to do so. There may be other electors who have voted in this election from selfish or unworthy motives. To them I would say let us part in peace. I have, never sought the support of : . such, people, and I not now regret having: lost it. ,Geutlemen, I hare represented this district, with a short interval, for 21 years, and I am sure jouy will excuse me if I say that there ia something painful in thus parting. . Perhaps some of that feeling is due to mortified vanity. If it be so let me* assure you that the feeling of mortification will soon pass away, and I shall only remember your long continued confidence and kindness." -r-jN.2L Times" correspondent.
