The Samoan War

On declaring war the German Compdore landed a force of 250 men each from the war vessels Olga, Carols, and Sophia, in all 700 men,, and took possession of Samoan Govern* ' ment House. They broke into the Miss aion House of the London Missionary Society, ami several. pother housei.; The German flag having been hoisted, a force, of about 400 men, with fixed bayonets headed by a band, marched through the town, nnd returned to Government Hou.«e when the majoriy of them were sent back to their ships, leaving a guard and patrol parties on shore. On August 25th the Carola returned to Apm with Tamasese on board and he was saluted by the Commodore's ship and installed as king. A massacre is feared, and the schooner Lily, which arrived in Suva, was despatched by the English and American residents of Samoa at the cost of 1000 dollars to secure a man«of»vvar.
