Gold Discoveries at the Thames
[PER {UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I r- ..... % Thames, September 8. The newifind at Hikutaia is creating a good deal of excitment. In the Warden's Court to-day the application of prospector- Mcßrinn, who made.' th<9 discovery^ for a licensed folding -of 36 acres, was heard. The Warden in a lengthy and exhaustive ruling explained the difference between claims and licensed holdings, and described the new find from a personal observation. The reef is 7ft thick, and is loose friable quartz, rich in gold and silver. The following official assays have been made to-day from & sample of quartz of well mixed parcels, halfpounds each, as follow: — Bank of New Zealand assay— Gold, 98oz; silver, 17750z per ton. Mr Heigh way first assay — The gold at 630z, and silver at 1811oz per ton, value £570 <:; the second assay of the gold was 940z, and silver JBo7oz per ton, value £617. The School of Mines as6:-iy the gold at 83oz, and the silver 1 7f)8oz per ton.
