The Fielding Star. TUESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1887. A Badgered Bishop

When the Bishop of Dunedin mada ■sweeping charges of immorality in the large schools of the col«ny, especially, against the young girls attending them, ' he could not have anticipated what a hornets' nest he would raise about his ears, or probably he would have exercised a little restraint over his tongue. The comments of the press, letters published and letters forwarded privately, have forced him to make a half hearted denial of his intention to convey the impression made on the minds of his hearers by his ill-advised accusation. The following is the concluding paragraph of a letter the Bey. gentleman addressed to a Dunedin paper on the subject, in which he appears to make his position even worse: — 44 Of course it would be easy for me to reply that I never supposed that such conduct as I referred to was exhibited to any great extent in the publicity of large schools, nor necessarily in school buildings at all ; but I have no wish whatever to press the subject— the argument I had in hand will stand very well without it ; and though I do not regret having said what I did, because I have reason to believe that it was too well founded, and that to have spoken will do good, yet I would be the foremost to declare that I believe the majority of our young girls to be all that we can desire. — I am, &c., S. T. Dunedin. We leave our readers to form their own opinions as to the straightforwardness or otherwise of such a production. The concluding two lines are simply: an impertinence.
