The Fielding Star. THURSDAY. AUGUST 4 , 1887. The Manawatu Seat
Norw^rH|9TANi)ijrG the ( sti^nuousj *fr %tts made in. various pari£ of ! the i^l^watu electorate, as well, as in soni^ ol Ikhose adjourning it, no candidate has yet mustered up courage to oppose the lftto member, Tiir jMLaqaXt thuk. , A, number of gentlemen have jbeen, mentioned as probable, candidates^ but as . soon as their names were put lief ore the public, each ib his turn has denied' the, soft impeachment. The otjljon.e who has, as yet, shown 'aay' inclination to make the -venture is the Mayor of I'almerston, J^r Wbst; aii^ iie; prudently enough in our opinion, has required definite ,prom T ises of 'liberal support before hie will commit himself. As we have no knowledge whatever of his political views, we caa make no comments; on them, but whatever they may be, [we should say his chances of election w^ere confined to a narrow limit. However, we have no doubt he and his friends will make a gallant fight fur 'the seat if Mr West goes to the poll. In the meantime he will hare abundance of leisure to coach 1 up the political ! history lof i New ] Zealand, and increase his knowledge on the subject of Protection Tr-Freetrade.
