False Weights
[per united press association.! Dunedin, Jnne, 8. James Campbell, a butcher, at this morning's sitting of the police court, 1 was charged with having false weights in his possession. He raised in extenuation of his offence four points, of which three certainly had the charm of novelty. The first of the four was that he had bought the weights innocent of their being light ; the second was that he and his wife were so cut up at being summoned that they had shut up the shop and they were going leave the country ; the third plea was that although he sold meat with the light weights, several of his customers did not pay him ; the last and the most original of the lot was that he had a brother who hud borno a good character for 25 years. All were of no avail, as tho Magistrate decided to inflict a fine, which the defendant paid, with tho remark that, it was the lust mouoy ho would over pay to the ' , cuuit.
