Opening of the Victorian Parliament
By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright. (keutku's telegrams.) Melhouknk, June 7. The Victorian Parliament was opened to-day I>y his Excellency Sir I Henry Loch. In the Governor's speech, { which was of an uneventful character, ! reference is made to the celebration : of Her Majesty's Jubilee, as well as | to the results of the Imperial Conference. Regarding Victorian defences, it states that in short time these will absolutely defy insult or attack. There was reason to believe that the firm tone adopted by the Australian delegates to the Imperial Conference with regard to the N»w Hebrides would have great weight with the Imperial Government in arriving at a settlement of the question. A Ro*al Commission had been appointed in connection with the Melbourne Exhibition. The contracts which had recently been concluded for the carriage of Australian mails would secure an increase of speed and greater frequency at a reduced cost. Regret was expressed at the Windsor railway accident. The measures to be introduce would include bills relating t« the protection of women, forestry, local government, and the Metropolitan Board of Works. A bill would also be introduced for amending the Shops and Factories Act.
