Exciting Wrestling Match
The great wrestling match between Cannon aud Connor, for £500 a-side and the championship, took place in Melbourne on .the 21st inst. The conditions were : three falls in the Grswio .Roman style. Fully 5,000 persons witnessed the match. At the outset, mainly on account of hi& previous form, Connor was the favorite ; nut after the second fall even his best friends regarded his defeat as certain. Tho first bout was a magnificent struggle, and after a good deal of play Cannon was slowly but surely pinned to the floor. In the second bout (fc'tys the Argus) Cannon completely changed his tactics, and, grasping Connor by the neck, almost chocked him. The latter, however, managed to free himself, but it was at once t;vid«ut_that he was at Canuon's mercy so greatly distressed was he by the terrible garutting he had received. The third bout was only the semblance of a\ struggle. Connor tried hard for the " haminerlock," but could not relax Cannon's elbow ; and the latter using what is known technically as the " Nelson hold" had no difficulty Lib opponent to the floor. The actual play did not occupy more than half an hour. The ' Age' declares it to have heen the finest exhibition of wrestling ever, seen in the Colonies. Connor who is a Newcastle miner, had up to this an unbeaten record of 109 matches; whilst Cannon, up to his first meeting with .Connor, had held the American championship of this style of wrestling- ."
