Hallway Acc ident at Brisbane
HAREOWING DETAILS. Brisbane May 19. A terrible accident happened on the unopened section of the Fassifern railway between seven and eight o'clock j tlnV morning. A ballast train, con- ( sis ing of an engine and six waggons in which were thirty men was travelling fast up the line- when the driver •.:*.■? that the points to the siding were o- !*'n. He at onco reversed the lover and applied the brakes, but he was unable to stop the train, which went into the siding and ran. against four trucks, which were thrown off and upset the engine. The engine-driver escaped, but many men were hurt. Several of. them jumped off when they saw the danger, but those who stuck to the waggons came off best. A navvy named Daniel Larkin was crushed" under a truck and had one log cut off, besides being badly smashed. The poor fellow died in ten minutes after he was taken out. Two men had their legs broken ; one had his hip put out of joint, and one had his chest badly crushed. These were the most severe injuries. The hroken trucks pinned many of the men to the ground. The cries of the injured were heart-rending. Nine of the most seriously injured of the men were placed in the Hospital.
