Wreck of the Schooner Reward

The schooner Reward, bound from Oamaru to Auckland with a cargo of produce, went ashore at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 20 miles from Mania and near Portland Island, and broke in pieces immediately. William Andrews, ' master, John Sweeney, seaman, and the. cook, whose name is unknown, were drowned- Frederick Qlin, mate, and Edward Lambert, seamen, were • saved. When the vessel struck all j hands got in a boat and tried to get } ashore, but the boat struck about a ohain from the wreck, and filled, and Olin and Lambert, being naked, managed to reach land. The weather at the time was so foggy that the captain could not see the Portland light. The natives 'found . the survivors next day and brought them to Mahia last night. Andrews has a wife and three children at Lyttelton. No cargo was saved. The bodies are not yet recovered. > H ' i". -■•■'■
