John Robinson, a pensioner of the Imperial service, who has resided m Feilding for many years, died in the Wanganui Hospital yesterday of general debility. Nominations for the vacancies in the Manchester Koad Board will be received by Mr H. L. Sherwill, the Returning Officer, on or before Saturday, the 16th of April, at noon. The advertisement appears in another column. A number of " birds of passage," or more correctly speaking, " walking totalisators," put in an appearance at the races yesterday. Trade, however, did not appear to be brisk with them, fhe sporting public preferring the genuine totalizator in which to invest their money. We regret to learn that Mr Leonard Jones, of the firm of Jones and Son. of Wanganui, died on Saturday last of typhoid fever. The company of Wanganui Rifles, and the officers of the West Coast battalion, wore mourning at the Easter encampment out of respect to the memory of the deceased. The New Zealand Times of this morning says, with reference to the Volunteers at Taranaki — "The conduct of a large number of the volunteers seems to be simply abominable, and such as to reflect the greatest disgrace on every one concerned." We are in a position to give this statement a most unqualined denial. Mr T. Bush, the well-known draper and clothier, of Wanganui, is again to the fore with some startling bargains. His advertisement appears in another column, wherein- he announces that he has taken the premises next Mr Keen's, bootmaker, and will shortly open up a choice assortment of seasonable clothing and drapery. The performance at the Town Hall, last evening was well attended, the front teats being comfortably filled. The entertainment paused off in a most successful manner, and applause on the part of the audience was frequent throughout the evening. Several of the songs were highly applauded, notably a " local song," which proved a great hit, and provoked roars »f laughter. An amusing comedietta, by a number of amateurs, brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
