MELBOURNE EACES. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. [keuteus' telegrams.] Melbourne, February 26The first day's racing of the Victorian Racing Club's Autumn meeting was held at Flemington to-day. The weather was fine, and the attendance on all parts of the course was large. Owing to rains having fallen during the previous night the course was . heavy. The results aro as follows : — I Essendon Stakes. — Nelson 1, Volcano 2, Dunlop 3. Ascot^Vale IStakes. — Hortense 1, Sumatra 2, Bedouin 3. St. Leger. — Trident 1, Madelina 2, Chesham 3. ' Newmarket Handicap.-— Lochiel 1 4 Aimer 2, Lando 3. The first to get away were William Tell, Blairgowrie, Honora, Mitrailleuse, St. Leonards, and Lochiel. At. the tan crossing Blairgowrie led, followed by Lochiel, Abner, Honora, Lando, and St. Leonards. In this order they raced to the carriage paddock, where Abner forged ahead, and appeared to be winning up to within 20 yards from home, when Lochiel came with a splendid rush, and won by a neck. Mitrailleuse was about seventh. February 28. The newspapers to-day, especially the Age, considers the Newmarket Handicap ought to have been awarded to Abner. Public opinion likewise confirms this view.
