Fire Brigade (assisted bysailtitß (arid marines of H.M.S. Nelson) worked, ; admirably. The cause of the origin lof the fire is a mystery.. The build---1 ings totally destroyed are as follow : — J. Huxley, tailor's shop ; Leary and I Campbell, auction mart; Barraudand ;Sons, chemist's shop ; T. Kennedy IMacdonald and Co., auction mart (and sMaginnity's wine and spirit cellar) ;- |Thdmpson,; Shannon, and Co., sofV • goods warehouse and factory. Those wrecked are— Buckley j Stafford, and jßarton, solicitors' offices ; and Clarke's iboardinghouse. J. Parker and Co.'s .'warehouse was greatly damaged. jEdwards and Green's, premises were igreatly damaged, as were the roof, windows,, and stock on the top floor * of Johnston's bonded store. Th«> ! aggregate losses were < stated af£lso,ooo, and the Insurance Coin--panics at £78,000. It ia estimated, however, that both are considerably over the mark.
