Beach and Hanlan
From an English exchange we take the following: —"Edward Hanlan, the exchampion oarsman of the world, arrived at New York on December 20th in the Aurania (Cunard line). In reply to questions, Hanlan said: —' I am going to Toronto to-morrow night but I shall stop at Montreal on the way.' ' When do you expect to go to Australia V ' Probably in about six weeks. I have so timed my visit thafr I will be able to row this match with Beach without having been enerated by the relaxing climate of the antipodes.' Is the race with Beach a certainty yet ?' ' Just about, I deposited £100 before I left London as a forfeit on a challenge to row Beach on the Nepean river, in Australia, for £500 aside, he has not cabled his acceptances. I have an assurance thatthe well-known sporting man Mr Joe Thompson, of Melbourne, has posted £250 forfeit on behalf of Beach for a match with me in Australia. I certainly expect to win in the coming match, to take place in June or July, which will be winter in Australia. If Beach can defeat me on the Nepean I should be satisfied that he is a better oarsman than I am. The Nepean affords an absolutely fair course.'"
