An Extraordinary Milk Yield
The most extraordinary milking record yet made public, we believe, is that of the Holstein cow Nierop, five years old, the property of Mr "Whippie, of Cuba, New York state. According to the sworn testimony of a witness, this cow yielded 1161 bof milk in one day of twenty-four hours, and 31291 b, or 305ga1., in,*hirty days which is as much as some poor cows yield in a year. The same cow when four years old, according to another sworn witness, gave in a day 80ib of milk, from which he produced 2lb \3£oz of butter. Another remarkable^ record is that claimed fey Messrs Smith Dowell, and Lau»b, ©f Syracuse N.Y., wly> declare that their entireherd of mature Holstein cows, (they do not say b/>w mange) yielded in twelve months an average of IT, 1661 b 4oz of milk each. Many people are sceptical about the wonderful milking records so freely published m the United States,, though it is known that the Hoi steins aragreafr producers of milk, which, is usu«ily oJNery. poor quality.
