Escape of a Convict From Prison
(peb united press association.)
Wellington, January 31
A long sentenced prisoner named Crabtree has escaped from Mount Cook gaol. At the official inquiry today it was shown that the method by which he obtained his liberty was ingenious. He had by some means obtained a gouge, and first tried to remove the staple of the door ; finds ing this impossible he gouged out the hinges, and thus was enabled to force the door open from the back, and and squeeze himself out. How he got over the wall without being observed is not kuown, but as the walls are not high, there would be no great difficulty in doing so. Up to the present Crabtree is at large, but a boy reported to the police that he had seen a man answering to his description at Lowry Bay, on the opposite side of the harbour.
Tim Day. Crabtree is not yet captured. Several reports are current that the prisoner was seen iv various parts of the town, but are without foundation. Tho warder ou duty at the time of his escape has been suspended.
