Special Bank Holidays
The Wairarapa Star has, as well as ourselves, taken up the subject of Special Bank Holidays, but not with kid gloves : — " Whether Banks exist for the convenience of the public, or the public exist for the oouvenience of Banks is becoming a moot question. We axe tempted to make this remark not exactly by the peculiar way that Banks haveof granting accommodation to their customers when they can do without it a&d then pouncing down on them liie the active, watchful rabbittrapper whaa they are slightly entangled and really want assistance, but by the supercilious way in which they ignore the convenience of the public by shutting up shop wheD they want a holiday. Considering their fat dividends and heavy reserves Banks ought not to be too poor to advertise their special holidays. But there is something: far worse than poverty, and it attaches itself like a dry rot to certain wealthy institutions, and that i.s meannfisa. The Banks that flourish iv our midst being too mean to spend a shilling or two in advertising the fact, we feel it our dnty in the interests of the
business public for once to set aside a very wholesome journalistic rule, and to announce that th^-three banks will be closed on Monday as well as Saturday. We trust Tbhis notification will be able to reach most of our countryreaders in time to prevent inconvenience and disappointment. At the same time we must say that it shows a great courtesy and good judgment on the part of those who preside over these institutions that they are unable to notify to the public that they are putting up their shutters for an extra holiday without the gratuitous assistance of the benevolent journalist."
