The Marton Gold Discovery
DISAPPOINTED EXPECTATIONS When it was reported that gold : had been found by a Marton settler ■< while digging a well, hopes were entertained that a new goldfield might bo the outcome. The original report was very encoui'agiug, and a shovelful of the auriferous sand was sent to the Public Works Department and forwarded to Dr Hector for examination. The result of the examination is however, very discouraging. Dr Hoctor has forwarded to the Depart- : niont the following memorandum :•— j " Tho sample is groy and black sand, | with about 50 flaky spaces of alluvial j (beach) gold, weighing about 7 of a ' ■ grain. If this is the result of a shovelful of the wash, it would
