Death from Drink
(PER UNITED PEKBB ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, December 29. A man named Robert Walker, aged 66, a gum digger, was found dead on the roadside. He left his whare for a flaxmill store to sell gum, and went to Dargaville, where he spent his time at the hotels. He returned towards his camp, and got as far as the Maori church at Taita. Ou the 21st December he was seen and spoken to by two men who found him on the roadside very weak. He said that lie had beon there since the previous morning, but he had lain there 2 or ;{ days. An hour afterwards he was found dead in the same place. The scrub around him was beaten down, showing that he had crawled about. Near him was found his swag, in which wei-e some plums and suet, intended for a Christmas pudding. •There also lay near him five bottles, all empty, but which had recently contained spirits, and which undoubtedly pointed to the cause of his death.
