Feilding Boxing Day Sports
At day-break yesterday morning the weather was very threatening and heavy rain fell at about Six o'clock. After one very heavy shower the weather cleared, and remained fine for the rest of the day. At ten o'clock there was a fair sprinkling of people on the Oval, and after the trains had discharged their living frieght, the lawn gradually filled up and presented a very striking picture from the number of well dressed ladies who graced the proceedings with their presence. The number of visitors from other parts of the district and colony was considerable, and those among them who visited Feilding for the first time were much pleased with the place and people. The Feilding Brass Band was present, and the music was much appreciated by the hundreds of couples who, during the day, enjoyed themselves on the dancing platform. The usual " lawful games'^ were present, and were well patronised. Mr Summers catered at the booths, and gave universal satisfaction. For those who did not care to indulge in anything but pure water ample provision was made in a large tank which was conveyed on the ground in a dray. A number of fam__.es who were brought to the spot in their own carts or drays, camped, gipsy fashion, in the rising ground at the rear of the sports, and " boiled the billy" in great comfort. The arrangements made by the stewards were most complete, so that everything worked smoothly and without a hitch during the whole day. The rules were rigidly observed, so that the fullest justice was meted out to any offender. Fortunately only one man was disqualified — McCune — for breaking in the 1 Mile Walking Handicap. A protest was entered against Pyke who ran second in the Maiden race. The protest was dismissed as the event in which Pyke had contested before was a private match confined to the members of the Poneke Football Club. The followis the order of events : — 1. A good start wa9 effected, and the men got away at a splendid pace, so much so that McCune was forced to break, and having been duly cautioned was very properly disqualified. However, he continued till the finish, and was ahead of the second man. Hodge walked in splendid style — fair heel and toe with great power and speed. McManus was much admired, but he had to be content with fourth place. Bigg and Bambry made good work, and well deserved their places as second and third men. Our local lads, Clark, Rutherford, Poad, and Parr showed j good metal, but the older men were too good for them. As usual, Clark walked | a plucky race from start to finish, but | the fates were against him. However, he ; has got it in him, and he is bound to get in front some day.
