Manchester Road Board
The ordinary meeting of the Manchester Road Board was held on Sat- ■ urday last at tiie offices of the Board. , Present — Messrs Macarthur (in the ( chair), Linton, and Cotter. Tibe minutes of the previous meeting ««re read and confirmed. Correspondence. Prom Thomas Lowes, asking the name of W. T. Watts to be substituted for his in the rate book. From J. Aitken, tollkeeper, forwarding cash receipts up to December 3rd. From H. Print asking for a permit to cross the bridge free. From Reuben Stubbington, requesting the Board to strike his uame off the rate book, and put on L. A. Caldwell instead. From D. L. Smith, on behalf of Mr John Manson, drawing attention to the state of the Waituna road, and asking if the Board could have tha same formed in order to get seed" and wire for fencing, on the laud. Also stating that the road had been felled according te agreement with the Board. Frosu & Ooodbchere, enclosingdraft agreement re tolls «n the Otanjgaki bridge. Fr«»m the Colonial Secretary, re special order made by the Board adopting "The Local Bodies Loans Act 1886" generally, and asking: Iho Board to forward a copy of the special order with a certificate thereon that it has been duly pnssed in accordance V'ith section 7(5 of " The Road Boards Act 1882." Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded by Mr Cotter, That the Board is not an a position to undertake the work on the Waituna at present. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Cotter, seconded by Mr Linton, That Mr Caldwell's name ha placed on the rate book for section 73, in place of that of Reuben Stubbington. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Macarthur, seconded by Mr Cotter, That the attention of the Government be drawn to the fact that the contractor for the Gorge contract is felling all the trees on the line into the Manawatu River, and that the inevitable effect will be to destroy or seriously damage the new bridge at the lower ferry. This Board is therefore of opinion that the Government should instruct their Engineer to compel the contractor to cut the trees into such short lengths as will tend to prevent a block of timber at the bridge when the river is in flood. — Carried. I Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded by Mr Cotter, That the attention of the contractors for the Gorge Railway contract be called to the fact that if he fells the timber on the railway line into the Manawatu River a block of timber will occur at the Rangitikei bridge at the Lower Gorge when there is a flood which will destroy or damage the said bridge, and that the Board will hold him liable for such damage. — Carried. Accounts for £819 14s Id were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
