BAND V. RIFLES.
TO THE KDITOR OF THE STAR,
Sik,— ln reply to Mr Daw's letter, published in your last issue, I have to state I had nothing to do with the first match. I was asked by the Captain to ijnake one to gei up a team — Sergeant Bilderbeck was the other. In the first plaoe the Captain asked Sergeant Bilderbeck to get up the team . The tkptain seeing myself and Sergeant Bilderbeck talking togother, came to us and said—" You two Serjeants get up a team to fire the Band." "fiow, sir, Mr Daw has left out that I went to the Barracks on Friday night, and finding Sergeant Bilderbeck there informed him aud Mr Daw that the Heasons and myself were busy shearing and could not possibly attend. A postponement of the match was asked for, which Mr Daw agreed to, but no stated time was mentioned when it would come off afterwards. I deny that any jealousy has been shown on my part, and whatever I have done has been after consultation with the Captain. Mr Daw, as an old Dragoon and Volunteer, should know that any challenged team should be prepared to meet the best men brought against them. On the last Government Farade I gave Mr Daw A verbal challenge to fire six to eight or eight to ten men, Mr Daw offering to get the sum of ten pounds as a stake, and fire the Manchester Rifles. It will be seen by these facts that ; what I said in my letter was correct, and Mr Daw is wrong in saying that 1 did anything in the affair without the consent of the Commanding Officer.—l am &c., T.
