Beach Retires from Sculling
The London Sportsman of October 16 has the following : -" Mr Deeble author* ises the editor to state that William Beach has finallj decided te retire to private life. The champien has beaten all the protnin- nt scuUrr* of hit day, and therefore consider* he is entitled to rest on his laurels. His private affairs now claim a large portion of his attention." A cablegram represent* William Btach as saying during a meeting he had with kdward Hanlan, at the Cambridge Musical Hal!, London, that he had made £10,000 during his brief career as a sculler, and he propowed oa hi* return to Australia to devote himself to hi* farm, holding himself, hewever, in readiness to accommodate anyone willing to undertake to wrest the championship from him, on the Paramatta. He made ne formal response to Hanlan'i challenge. J A.
