Oeorge T utter, waiter ih an oyster saloon, deposed that Perm and the girl had supper at the saloon a night or two before the '-Sovereign of the Seas left Auckland. • In paying for the supper Perm said " Tins is the last three shillings you will have from me for a lone time." There was no dispute as to the charge. Adam Henderson, part owner of the Sovereign of the Seas, said Caffrey. worked the cutter for one third of the earnings. Saw Caffrey •eu Monday, the 14th June, when he promised to call next day and square up, feeing about £17 behind in Ihe «ccounts. : Cafivey did not -call. Felt uneasy, and went down to the cutter »n4 told Pens, on no aceouat was the •cutter to leave for the Barrier till CJafirey saw witness. Despite this notice the cuttor sailed without Caftrey callimg. John Brett and Samuel .Robertson deposed to sending stores to the Sovereign of the Seas, and Fiederiek Somers, quarryman at Eanjgitoto Island, deposed to the cutter ! gaing ashore there on the morning of ; 18th June. Witness went on board, •adsawOafirey, Perm, and the girl and helped to get the vessel off, lor which. CafErey thanked him and ' &ts mates. C. 8.. Chapman, stationer deposed that Caffrey in June last: feought from Jiirn a chart of the south- ! 'west coast <sf South. America. That was about a week befor the Sovereign of the Seas left Auckland, and Caffxey was *hen accompanied by a' jceung man whom he took to be Perm. i Caff rey and Perm were committed ! fur trial. Caffrey said aothing. Perm «aid that or tike morning he went to Taylor's house he meant no harm — j •did harm to no one, and never shot Taylor. ■
