At any moment, therefore, the earth may be smashed up into a million asteroids to career through space at their own sweet Will. We (Marlborouch Express) understand that Mr Rutland, the Crown Land Ranger, has been for some time pa«t engaged on a catalogue of the flora of the northern part ef the South Island, and that it will form part of a general catalogue of New Zealand plauts which is being prepared for the Government under the direction of Professor Kirk. No better man than Mr Rutland could have undertaken the wort- His botanical knowledge is extensive, and his acquaintance with the district unequalled. Botanists ia other parts of the colony will be -astonished to find how many plants exist in the Peloxus which have hitherto been supposed to be absent from the South Island entirely.
