The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, NOV. 13, 1886. Shoddy Knights

The last addition to the rapidly expanding list <ti " men of title" in New Zealand in the person of Sir Walter Lawby Buller, is not one which will be received with approval of the people. It has been an open secret for some that it was the fixed intention of that gentleman to have a prefix to his name aB a handle whereby he might be lifted above the common herd. By the exercise of his remrfrkable powers of assurance he has accomplished his ambition. The question in most men's minds is naturally — What has he done to deserve this honer at the hands of Her Majesty the Queen and Empress ? He has done the State no good as a politician for the excellent reason that the electors of those constituencies he has attempted to woo, would have nothing to do with him. In every instance he has failed to inspire the slightest confidence in their minds, so that when he went to the poll he generally found his name at the bottom of the Xist. The weakness of the present Ministry in appointing him a Special Commissioner to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition was his opportunity, and it is just possible that Sir Walter Buller won his spurs on the mistaken idea held by many persons high in authority in the Home Country, that " anything is good enough for the colonies." His donation of £5,000 to the Imperial Institute was not injudiciously made, and has met its reward. Colonists will now be able to form an exact estimate of the money value of the letters KC.M.G.
