The Manchester Rifles

The Manchester Rifle Volunteers paraded for Government Inspection in tho Public Hall on? last Thursday evening. There was a fair muster of about 41 although many of the men were absent shearing. Colonel Stapp having inspected the .men, Sergeant Major Henry took them in hand, and gave the corps some useful instruction in company and battalion drill. At the conclusion of the parade, the men were consulted as to the best day on which to hold the judging distance parade, and Saturday the 27th instant ; was selected. It was also arranged that Sergeant Major Henry should attend at the Public Hall on the previous Friday (26th instant) at T p.m. for the purpose of giving instruction in guard mounting, relieving sentries Ac. As the corps has never before been instructed in these very important duties, officers and men should gladly avail themselves of this opportunity. During the evening a challenge was given by the Band to the corps to fire a friendly match this (Saturday) afternoon,' it is neediest to aay ft was promptly accepted. The secretary was also instructed to send a challenge to the Marton Royal Rifles, the match to be fired at the Feildiug, butts, as the last match wus contested at Marton. Several other matches are. in contemplation; and as the class-fir* ing, so far, has been very good, it is expected the corps will take a good position on the lint this year.
