The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1886. Good Taste
The northern men wero quite " out in the cold" yesterday. Although there were present the Hon. John Bryce, one of the oldest members of the House, and a member of the Ministry that introduced tho Act, under which this railway was constructed, aud granted those concessions to the company which rendered its existence possible ; Mr Wilson, the member for the electorate in which tho ceremony was held, and through which the line runs nearly its entire length ; Mr Macarthub, in whose electorate tho Manawatu terminus lies ; and last, but not least, Mr James Linton, one of the original directors of the company, whose services as a promoter of the company and valuer of land (he saved the shareholders £23,000 in this connection) have been exceeded — we might say equalled — by none of tho other directors ; yet none of these gentlemen were invited either on the day or before it, to take any other part than that of spectators. We think this omission was a mistake, to say the least of it, on the part of a company entitled the Wellington- Manawatu Railway Company, depending for its profits on the exertions and laboi*s of the settlers at this ond of the line.
