The Waikato Saurian Monster

A correspondent of the Tauranga " News" thinks, siuce the Waikato " Saurian" has come to the front, that '< it would not be. amiss to revive the Opotiki amphibious monster. " Some ! time ago a party of our Maoris were .' out pig hunting, and one evening were J camped ou the bank a of river at the 1 foot of a hill. One of the party on coming into camp stated that he had been chased by an animal half man and half horse ; but this story was not believed. At about ten o'clock at night two of the party, who were playing cards heard something descend on top of their whare, and, on going outside, beheld by the aid of the moon the same animal throwing stones from the top of the hill. The whole camp was aroused, and a chase ensued. The animal was pursued for some distance along the river bank, but as the pursuers gained it jumped into the river. Then the pig dogs were sent after it, but as they were about to .close on it, it disappeared in the river and was seen no more — unless, perhaps, it has gone to the Waikato." It seems to us that an amphibious monster that can throw brickbats and' commit burglary aud sheep stealing deserves to be looked after. Where ; are the police ? — Auckland Star. : Advertisers are requested to send in J their notices not later than Monday at 2 in the afternoon, as the Stak will be ! published on that day, instead ©f Tuesday, the Prince of Wales' Birthday.
