The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1886. Wellington- Manawatu Railway THE OPENING CEREMONY.
Tee driving of the last spike on the Wellington-Manawatu Railway will be performed to-morrow by His Ex-, cellency tbe Governor Sir W. Js&vois. It is intended tp mark this auspioious and important event in the history of the province of Wellington with considerable ceremony. Invitations have been sent to every shareholder in the company resident in Wellington or up the line ; to members of both houses of Parliament; to the Mayors and Councillors of the several Boroughs; and to the Press ; so that the gathering will be a thoroughly representative one. We are unable to give a programme of the intended proceedings our knowledge of them beiug limited to the bare facts that after his Excellency has driven the last spike two engines will meet en the line and crush a bottle of champagne between them (rub noses so to speak). After this there is to be sumptuous lunchbon provided, in a spacious marquee ereotedspecially for th- • coi. m datura of the guests, when tke uouul loyal and congratulatory toasts will be drunk and speeches be delivered. The only thing needed to make the ceremony a brilliant success will be fine weather.
