Russia and Turkey
Later intelligence from London states a report is current to the effect that Turkey is willing to admit a Russian garrison to the Dardanelles on condition that she is allowed to occupy Bulgaria and Roumelia herself. We are inclined to put this down as a mere canard because although the Turks are netoriously bad politicans, and utter.y dishonest, they would never dream of surrendering what is the real source of their influence in the affairs of Europe, the key to India. Immediately Russia secured the Dardeuelles a garrison wou.d be placed in Constantinople and the chief object of Russian ambition since the death of Peter the Grea" , would be attained. Before that happens, however, England will have to be a consenting party. Many bloody battles will have to be lost and won ere she will surrender the control of the highway to India to a rivai European Power. The report is doubtless a canard but it shows how the eyes of politicians in England are diroctjd to the weakest point in the chain which connects England with hur Ind a Empire. The Russians say it is only one step from Constantinople to Calcutta.
