The Late Captain Gain
The late Captain Cain, it may be mentioned, died at his residence, Woodlands, Timaru, on January 29th in the present year, and was buried on Sunday, January 31st. 'He was "seventy years of age, and until within a few months of his death, when he began to show the effects of .advancing age, was a hale and vigorous old man. In January last his. illness assumed a mere serious shape, and taking into consideration- his years and the infirmities which had evidently been creeping upon him, no great surprise was expressed in Timaru, where he had acquired a good deal of property, and had won much respect by his honest str4ightfoi - ward manners and unassuming disposition.' The startling news which is now published as to the ui{:nuer in which h© actually met his <1< ath, thorefoio cannot fail to cause deep sensation in. the .community where lie was so well known. Before Captain Cain finally settled •lowh to spend the remnant of his •lays at Tim.iru, he had had a very adventurous life. He was a seafaring man by profession, and owned a small vessel, with which he did a good deal of coastal trading in the earliest days of the colony. . He also went to Sydney and on one occasion to San Francisco. He was present at Kororareka in 1885 whon Hone Heke surprised and sacked the town, driving the English soldiers and settlers on board the vessels in the harbors. The old man had a good memory, and was able to give a very graphic description of the affair— one of the most exciting scenes in New Zealand history. — Christchurch Press.
