The Belfast Riots
It appears that the fatal riot in Belfast arose through an attempt to rescue two prisoners who were being conveyed to the police barracks in custody of a corps of police constables. The police warned the people not to attempt the rescue of the prisoners, and that if they did they (the police) would have t<» resist by every means in their power. In spite j of the warning the attempt was made, and the police resorted to the use of their firearms. The mob gathered in force and charged the police with sticks and stones, and the police replied with bullets. One man and one woman were killed on the spot and twelve persons were seriously wounded.
