The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1886. The Cemetery Road
It will be seen by our report of the proceedings of tho Manchester Eead Board, held en Saturday last, that the Feilding Borough Council wrote to the Board asking them to put the Cemetery road in a passable condition. In answer to tbis request the Board passed a resolution to the effeot that they were not in a position to do anything to , tbe road. We gather from this that" no help can be obtained from that source. The only course now left is for the public te take the matter into their own hands. Wo would suggest that the Mayor instruct the Borough Engineer, Mr Bhay, to prepare an estimate of the probable cost of the work, and when that is ascertained, let a subscription list be opened. We believe a sufficient sum would be collected in a week. There is not a single person in the whole district who would not lend a helping hand in such a good cause. On Sunday last it was pitiable to see the horses struggling through the stiff and clinging mud, which in one place threatened to engulph altogether a somewhat overladen vehicle. While we are on this subject we may point out it is a mistake to allow conveyances to be taken inside the cemetery gates. There is no real occasion for it. They should permit mourners to alight and form in procession at the gate and march from thence to the grave with decorum, instead of straggling in groups up the side of the hill. In conclusion we hope our suggestions wili be acted upon without any unnecessary delay. The condition of the road at present is a crying disgrace which should be removed at once.
