Feilding Borough Council

The ordinary meeting of the Council was held last Thursday evening. Present— The Mayor, Ore Worsfold, Evans, Bartholomew, P. Thomson, and Fowles. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read, and after a slight verbal amendment, were confirmed. The following correspondence waa read :-— From J. M. Higgin, asking the Council to refund a moiety of the cost of constructing footpath near hit premises in Kimbolton road. From W. "Watts, chairman of Uie School Committee, stating that the Committee were willing to allow the use of the School bell as a fire alarm on the Council finding appliances. From Mrs Doreen, asking the Council to assist her in proceeding to Wellington. From S. J. Thomson, requesting the Council to mako the footpath passable in front of bis business premises iv. Kimbolton road. The report ef the Finance Committee was read, recommending the payment of accounts, amounting to £2* 6s. < The report ofthe Borough Engineer I was read, with the estimated cost of i certain works. L report of the Public Works rCbmiuittee, xeeemmeudiug payment I of accounts amounting to £43 25.7 d. A report was read from the Borough Treasurer, showing, a statement of the banking account. lienolved, That tbe report of the Public "Works Committee, and the report of the Committee be adopted. After a short discussion, Cr Wors- . fold moved, and Or Evans seconded, That the account from Mrs Watts fer nursing Mrs Belfit be paid. — Carried. With reference to the matter referred to in Mr Higgin's letter,' Cr Thomson proposed, and Or Fowles seconded, That Mr Higgin's letter be received, and that the Council refund one half of the cost, as has been done in similar cases. Cr Thomson spoke in support of the motion, and Or Fowles said it was usual in such cases to refund half the cost. The Mayor pointed out that the Council was empowered to do so by the bye-laws. After a short conversation the motion was carried. A tender from J. Belfit for the ditch and stop-bank work in North street, for the sum of £13 6s Bd, was accepted, there being no other tender. A conversation ensued as to certain works which were required to be done as soon as the Council had the necessary funds. (At this stage Gr J. O. Thompson toek his seat). It was estimated thai the cost of the most urgent works wonld be about £100. Cr Thompson proposed, and Cr Evans seconded, That the Engineer be instructed to report on West and Duke streets at the next meeting. Carried. It was agreed that the matter of the other works required be deferred till next meeting, pending an arrangement with the hank. Cr Worsfold proposed, and Or Bartholomew seconded, That the Engineer be instructed to attend to the matter referred to in Mr S. J. Thompson's letter. — Carried. Cr Thompson here put in an account of £l from A. Diamond for certain work done at the Cemetery, and the same was passed for payment. A conversation was held on the matter of the school bell being used for a fire bell, the principal question being the pulling apparatus, to be provided by tbe Council, and how this should be arranged so as to prevent its being tampered with. Or Thompson proposed, and Cr Fowles seconded, That the Engineer be instructed to arrange with the Chairman of the School Committee, re the use of the school bell as a firoyr-r alarm, and to provide appliances, SuiV — Carried. Besolved, That Mrs Doreoif be informed that the Council has no funds at its disposal for the purpose asked for by her. The Council then adjourned. ___________________
