Fires at Auckland
Auckland, September 27. ; An epidemic of fires seems to bar* ', again broken out. Yesterday morning an unoccupied house in JDeuglasstreet, Ponsouby, belonging to Benjamin Archer, was burned down. It was an old building, and not of much value. A About 11 ajn- yesterday ,a fire was found in the premises Of Engletun, hair-dresser, Queen-street kui was suppressed before a great deal of damage was done. 1 About 3 a.m. today a dwelling-house and a toot factory, on College Koad Ponsonby, belonging to Moor*, were destroyed by fire. The premises being extensive and two stores in height, caused a large body of flames, and it was feared that tho residence belew oc- ! cupied by Moore senior, would also j go. Fortunately the fireman were ! able to save it, but Matthew Moore's dwelling, with furniture and ; boot factory with stock material and machinery, was burned to the f ground, nothing of any consequence having been saved. Moore states ; that he was awakened put of his sleep, and found the place full of smoke and flames, and had hard work to get out the children. A house belonging to Vizard, miner, Coromandel, has been burned down with furniture, stores, etc., including a .large quantity ok. gunpowder and dynamite.
