Manawatu Railway
It is confidently expected that, with fairly good weather, the through, line of the "Wellington and Mauawatu Railway Cempany will be completed within the next six weeks. Mr S. Brown's tunnel contract will be finished at the end of the current week and the work of ballasting and platelaying is going on simultaneously with the formation both north and south of Waikanae. There are only some seven or eight miles of ballasting and platelaying now to be done and this is proceeding at the rate of about one mile every four days. The •temporary line at Paikakariki has now "been abandoned, and trains are run-« ning on the permanent rails. The formation now in course of construction extends three miles south of Waikanae and four miles north. A block of some of the Company's best land, comprising about 15,000 acres, between Liuton and Shannon, will be put up for auction some time in December next, and, from its first class character, is expected to be eagerly competed for. The driving of the last spike in the line will be a matter of surpassing importance to vVelli ng~ ion, and will be attended by a ceremony befitting so auspicious aa occa. sion. — N.Z. Times.
