Feilding Borough Council
Aii ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Thursday evening. Present — the Mayor, and Councillors Bishop, Bartholomew, Evans, Eade, Worsfold, and Fowles. Tin minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — From Colonial Secretary's office ra the proposed share of New Zealand in presenting a memento to H.R.H. i'rince of Wales as ;Presiderit' of. the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. From District Railway Manager's office, Wanganui, re crossings ia Fitz- v roy and Russell streets, asking the Council to bear the cost. From Sandon and Carnarvon Road , Board re a culvert and drain in Wfst street. • >.. From Treasury Office, advice of re- / mittance of amount of subsidy to the Borough of £38 18s lid. From Wilfred Badger,. Christ-,, church, re " Local Government Guide and Ratepayer's Manual." . Report of Borough Engineer re certain works and also damages done to public property by recent floods. Report of Cemetery Committee with certain recommendations for necessary improvements. . . : . • From Donald McKenzie, reforming" a portion of Duke street, leading from North road. • ../-..'.,.-.• Report from the Borough Treasurer showing the position of accounts. . Proposed by Or Worafold, seconded by Cr Bartholomew, That the Engineer be asked to report on the cost ; of making crossings in Fitzroy and Bu«---sell streets. — Carried. ' : , •* Proposed by Cr Eade, seconded by. Cr Bishop, That the Sandon and; Carnarvon Board be 'informed that the Council have no funds at present for the work asked for.— Carried. .■ Proposed by Cr Worsfold, seconded by Cr Bartholomew, That the name Cr Fowles be added to the Library Committee. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Fowles seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the. Engineer's report of this date be carried out as soon as possible, — Carried. The matter of Ranger and Poundkeeper was again brought up. V Proposed by Cr Eade, seconded -by Cr Bishop, That the two shillings and ... sixpence charged for a notice being, served on persons having animals.; pounded be abolished within one mil© of the pound, and that fresh applica,^,,. tions be called for the post of Ranger and Poundkeeper under the abovo alterations. ■ . .. <A Cr Eade spoke to the motion, aittC^'a short discussion ensued, but on a reference to the Act it was agreed to let the motion drop. The following applications for the post of Ranger were received : — John Turner, Charles Hedges, William Arnott, James Harvey, J. H. Blackmore. Cr Fowles proposed, and Cr Bartholomew seconded the appointment of John Tnrner. Cr Bishop proposed, and Cr Evans seconded, as an amendment, the appointment of W. Arnott. A discussion followed, in which some Councillors were for one candi- . date and some for the other, each speaker freely expressing his respec-! tive opinion. • .../,' The amendment was put and lost. Cr Eade moved, and Cr Evans "§ec-\ onded, the appointment of J. H. - Blackmore. This motion was also lost. ..,.'', The original motion (for the appointment of John Turner) was then put to the Council and carried. ..V ..;. Resolved, That the reeomtnenda- '.. tions of the Committee be adopted; . ■, Resolved, That the Manchester. 1 Road Board be asked to put the Cemetery road in passable order. ' ; The Mayer reported having had " another application as to the relief of Mrs Doreen, who he said was living entirely en the charity of private indi- ; viduals. He thought it only fair that ■ the Council should do something to assist in the matter. . L Cr Eade moved, That Messrs Doreen be allowed 5s per week till the next meeting of the Council. Seconded by the Mayer and carried.
The Council then adjourned.
