Fatal Accident in Wellington

Mr W. J . Scott, landlord of the '.en tral Hotel, while standing on a small table on the first story of the hotel this afternoon searching for an escape in the gas pipes, overbalanced, and fell down the well «f the staircase, fulling heavily on his head, which struck the second step from the bottom. The fall must have been a clear 18ft at least, and, as Scott weighs 21st, the results were, of course, very serious. Mr Scott received a nasty scalp wound, and it is feared tiiat his spine is injured. It is not expected he will recover. Mr Scott is a well-known Volunteer, and a frequent competitor at the meetings of the New Zealand liifle Association. This Pay. W. J: Scott, who fell down the stairs •f the Central Hotel yesterday afternoon, died at two this morning. Paralysis set in. The life of W. J. Scott was insured for Ll.oOO, LSOO being in the Australian Mutual, and LIOOO in tke Accident Company.
