The Borough Council will sit on Thursday evening. Another rich quartz reef has been discovered north of Auckland. Wild dogs have "been at work on the lambs in the Kiwitea district. On dit that another stationer's shop is about to be opened in Feilding. Another auctioneer, Mr J. Keesing, is about to start business in Wanganui. Mr Edward Smith, of Taonui road, has a ewe which yeaned four lambs this season. There is a probability of an additional Catholic Bishop being appointed to New Zealand. We (Chronicle) understand that the Hon. Mr and Mrs Ballance are meditating a trip to the Old Country. A meeting in connection with the FeilditiK Athletic Boxing Day Sports will b« tailed within a few day*. The Foxton fisherman brought up a quantity of whitebait on Saturday. There was a regular run on them. Mr Churcher, of Feilding, who went Home some months ago, returned to Feilding last Thursday, looking much better for his trip. We learn from the Wairarapa Daily that an attempt is about to bo made to establish a free public library in Masterton. The English mail, ex direct steamer Euapehu, arrived here last night, bringing a very large number of letters and papers. The *iotion of the Rev. Mr Towgood at the Diocesan Synod, that a Church Congress should be held at Wanganui, has been carried. The Chronicle saya that the Volunteers are now turning their thoughts towards Waitara as the probable locality of the next Easter Encampment. Mr Haggen, of Woodvilla, has pur- j chased the Napier Evening News. He will take possession from the first of October. As the funeral of the late Mrs Leech* of Taonui, took place .on Sunday, the Feilding Brass Band did not perform on the Manchester Square on that day. We learn from the Standard that the officers who will shortly arrive in Palmerston to take charge of the Salvation Army are Captain Annie Whyto, and Lillie Owl. On Sunday last, when Mr Adsett was crossing the Oroua river, his horse stumbled and fell, throwing its rider into the river. Fortunately Mr Adaett escaped without injury. The Auckland Acclimatisation Society considers that pheasants are dying out from breeding in and in, and has instructed the secretary to ascertain how some new birds may be procured. The trial of Captain Webber for manslaughter in connection with the wreck of the Ly-ee-moon was concluded on Friday, when the jury were unable to agree upon a verdict, and were dischaged. The Postmaster advises us that the three cable routes to Europe, direct, via Hong Kong, and via Cochin China, are interrupted, 6O that we may not expect any European news for some days or it may be weeks. On Friday night last an entertainment and dance was held in the Foresters' Hall in aid of the Benevolent Fand. There were about seventy Foresters and their friends present. After paying expenses &c. the sum of £5 was placed to the credit of the fund. A boxing contest took place at Lome street Hall (Auckland) on Friday night betweeen John Laurie (West Coast champion) and James Martin (a local man]. In the fourh round Laurie knocked his opponent cut of time, and was declared the winner of the stakes, £25. The New South Wales footballers have been very unfortunate in their visit to New Zealand. They were beaten in Auckland, Otago, and Wellington, while their victory in the Wairarapa was equal to a defeat. The Nelson team is the only oae which has really been defeated by the visitors. In the shop window of Mr Nearjr, saddler, may be seen a very neat pieoe of workmanship in the shape of a plaited, kangaroo leather, bridle and breastplate. The idea is entirely novel, and well worth the notice of stockmen and others, who may occasionally have to exercise their ingenuity to replace a broken rein, or any of the leather part of a bridle. We understand that Mr Zachariah Davis has accepted the appointment of manager to the Woodville Cheese Factory. It was hoped he would remain in charge of the Makino Factory, but he preferred the chances at Woodville. Under the direction and superintendence of Mr Davis, the Woodville Factory ought to turn out the best cheese in the North Island. A special meeting of the stewards of the Feilding Jockey Club was hold on Saturday evening at the Denbigh Hotel for the purpose of appointing a secretary. There were four applicants for the post, viz., W. A. Sandilands, W. B. Retemeyer, F. Roe, and E. Logan. A ballot was taken which resulted in a tie between Sandilands and Eoe. Fortune was then called on to decide the matter, when she declared in favor of Mr Eoe, who was then properly appointed. Writing of the dioramas of Palestine, and the Hot Lakes districts of New Zealand, to be exhibited here on Thursday next, the Wanganui Herald remarks on the Lakft pictures : — We believe that it is this portion of the panorama which will take best with Mr Pownall's audience wherever he may show his pictures. As faithful representations of New Zealand scenery we have never seen them beaten, while the interest which attaches to the departed glories of the terrace district are sure to make thorn appreciated by all who see them. We have alluded to them, before, expressing the opinion that Hinemoa's Bath and Lake Taupe were amongst the best, but where all are good, and each in itself possesses peculiar fnatures of excellence, it is hard to single out any for special mention. The pictures are 12ft by 10ft. Mr Pownall deserves to havo a successful season with them, not only because lie has spent considerable time and pains in getting them rendy, but because of the merit they really possess.

An order has been made by the Wellingtou Magistrate against Charles Miles Matthews, in practice as a solicitor at Hawera, for the payment •£ 16s per week towards the support of his eight children. j A contemporary says that at a meeting of the Australian|Mercantilelusurance Co. held at Melbourne, a shareholder asked how it was that a Melbourne company received a greater amount in premiums from New Zealand than m Victoria. The Chairman said that was due to the fact that the rates were three times as high in New Zealand as in Victoria. There is a New England tradition that when Dr. Franklin was a boy the long* winded blessings asked by his father at table seemed to him tedious as well as long. In order to avoid wasting time, and still secure the Divine benediction, he begged his father, at the time pork rrai salting down for the winter's use, to say grace over the whole supply once for all. — " Notes and Queries." The Government proposes to issue another commission to enquire into the circumstances of the now famous Stark purchase in Auckland. This course has been made almost compulsory in consequence of the state of public feeling in Auckland, -where we understand the commission will hold its sitting. What good can bo done is impopsible to conjecture as the vendor of the land has left the colony and taken the money with him. A meeting of the Mutual Imps, was held on Wednesday night at the Provincial Hotel to bid farewell to Mr T. G. Nicholas when the opportunity was taken to present him with a handsome gold emblem of the fraternity- The presentation was made by Bro. Whittington in n very appropriate speech, which included an expression of regret on the part ot the lodge at Bro. Nicholas' departure. Bro. Nicholas having replied, his health was drunk with honors, and the evening wa? then devoted to a smoke concert. — Nadier Exchange. A Ballarat paper reports that at Clunes a clergyman ha« adopted the plan of taking up the collection himself. Occasionally, for the sake of example, be hands back a threepenny to the donor : — "Take it back, sir, and may the Lord hare mercy on your poor niggardly soul." Seats in that church are to let, I fa»cy. They have adopted a better plan in Detroit. The handsomest girls in the congregation are sent round with the plates. The success of this system in improving the contributions of the young men is said to be immense, and one wonders it has never been thought of before. There are some difficulties in getting census returns in Paris. The premises adjoining Messrs Hislop and Co.'s establishment, on the southern sido of Lnmb(on«quay, were submitted for public competition, and were knocked d»wn to Mr Wia. Nahr, of Westport, at £2150. A few minutes subsequently Mr Robert Haanah pur' chased the property from Mr Nahr for £2250, being an advance of £100 <>v the amount paid by the latter. The price given by Mr Hannah is at the rate of about £140 per foot.
