The earthquakes promised for the first week in September, have como rather before due date. From our telegrams it will be Been that earthquakes, accompanied with loss of life and destruction to property, have occurred m Greece, Italy and Egypt.
The following are the dates fixed for the standard examinations next mouth by Inspector Bindou : — Sandon, September 2nd and 3rd ; Carnarvon, 6th ; Campbelltown, 7th; Feilding, Bth to 10th; Awahuri, 13th; Makino Road. 14th; Beaconsfield, loth; Upper Taonui, 16th; Mangaone, 20th; Taonui, 21st; Stoney Creek, 22nd ; Ashurst, 24th ; Palmerston, 27th to 29th ; and Karere, 30th to October Ist.

To-day we publish a card from Messrs Thomas Chapman and Sons of Wellington, New Zealand, and Sydney, New South Wales. This firm has opened a branch in Wellington, at the solicitation of Messrs Stewart and Co., of Wellington , and several of the mill owners in the Wairarapa, for the purpose of carrying on the business «f selling saws and files, together with repairing and rehammering all kinds of saws, more especially circular saws. This part of the business is a specialty. We have everyconfidence that our local proprietors will avail themselves of the advantages offered by the advertisers.
A slight shock of earthquake wa« felt here ye.-terday at 12. 10 p.m. The Folding Borough Council will meet on Thursday next.

A horso, belonging to Mr S. Bowler* was struck by the 7.45 train last night. The injuries" inflicted are serious, but it is expected the unfortunate animal will recover.
On our first page to-day Mr W. H. Bishop intimates that he has now com menced business as a coachbuilder and wheelwright. His workshop is on the Makmo road.
On Thursday next Messrs Stevens and Gortoa -will hold a stock sale at the Palmerston Borough sale yards. Several additions are made to-day to the catalogue.
A meeting of all persons interested m the Manchester Horticultural Society is called for Friday evening noxt at Mr Bray's office. We hope there will bo a good attendance.
The Times says Tunnel No. 11 on the Manawatu railway, about 3 miles from Paikakariki, was finished Friday night, and the last tunnel, No. 12, will be finished in about three weeks
Tho Now Zoaland Times says it is defi•nately stated that the Wellington Magistracy has been offered to Mr Lowther Broad, District Judge and Resident Magistrate at Nelson.
We learn from the Telegraph that on July 14 the Borough of Napier 6 per cent loan was quoted in London at 115, while the Harbour Boards 5 per cent, loan was quoted at 105 ex dividend.
Frozen mutton is now being sent to England from the Falkland Islands. The carcases, although not equal to the New Zealand mutton, have commanded prices nearly equal to average New Zealand shipments.
The Wairarapa Daily, referring to Mr Wardell, R.M,, says .-—What the Department ought to have dene in the present emergency would have been to have given Mr Wardell a liberal retiring pension.

A Wellington city councillor complains that the Post Office clock is not sufficiently lighted up after 11 o'clock at ni^ht. It would be much better, m our opinion, for the said councillor to be in bed than prancing round the post office clock at all hours m the night to see what time it was.
We understand that a movement will shortly be made towards re-animating the Beyeral temperance bodies in Feilding, and the surrounding townships. For some time past they have had no occasion for great activity owing to the good work already accomplished, but the idea is getting abroad that they may be lulled- into a false security and their powers weakened from want of proper exercise.
A good goldfield on the Feuding Small Farm Association's Block would be a fine thing for the section holders and the district generally. We hear of one.of the settlers on the block having discovered in one of the gullies what he believes to be samples of the precious metal, and that he has taken, the stuff to Palmerston to have it tested. The discoverer we understand is a native of the Fatherland, and we can only hope that he has found something better than mere " German gold."
The contract for the Waiwaka section of the Napier- Woodville line has been signed by the contractor, Mr Martin Danaher. The section is 6 miles Id chains, and there is one tunnel 7 chains in length. The following were the tenders received by the Publio Works Department : — Accepted — M. Danaher, Auckland, £60,500. Declined— J. McLean and Sons, Wellington, £62,042; Whitaker and Mackie, Dunedin, £72,410; Mackie Bros., Kaikoura, £73,044 ; D. Qlendinning, Napier, £74,500 ; F. J. T. Price, Hokitika, £ 76,859.
The Woodville Examiner says the insurance tariff now imposed is a most iniquitous one and a determined stand should be taken against it. The editor suggests that the policies be offered in a block to an outside company at the old rates. It will be remembered that a similar course was adopted here fourteen months ago and no outside company could be induced to compete against the established insurance offices. We hope they may have have better luck in Woodville but as it will not depend on political influence we doubt th«ir success.
We are informed that Mr C. Smith, draper, from Te Aro, Wellington, and who has occupied Mr Reading's shop in Manuhester street, Feilding, for some time, has decided to remain positively only one week longer, and will close the
cheap sale on Saturday next, 4th instant We understand that rather than take the remaining stock of goods away with him he will, during the coining woek, offer the the same at prices altogether unheard of by residents on the Manchester Block, and to make any sacrifice within the bounds of reason rather than be at the trouble of re packing. Our readers will no doubt make a note of this, and lose no time in availing themselves of the advantages which Mr Smith has to offer. — Advt.
