Destructive Fire at Auckland
EIGHT SHOPS AND SIX DWEL-LING-HOUSES DESTKOYED. i r ~~~~ [pk'B UNITED PKBSSASSOCIATION.J Auckland, This Day. Last night a fire broke out in the shop of Clarke, -watchmaker, Eden Terrace. It spread -with rapidity until eight shops, six dwelling-houses, and a ladies' seminary were destroyed. The fire raged two hours, there being no water supply though within 200 yards of Kyber Pass Reserroir. The chief efforts were directed to j Baring the furniture and stock. The shops had all dwelling-houses attached and were mostly two storey wooden buildings. Insurances so far as known —Heath and Clark's blook, £450 in New Zealand and £200 in South British; Clarke's stock, £150 in Norwich Union ; Miss Jonston, £700 in New Zealand ; Mrs Beadell, £950 in United; Cole, £500 in United ; Henmgan, £150 in South British ; Simpson, £350 m Royal. This morning Clarke was arrested at his lodgings, and charged with arson. £200 worth of stock was discovered, and it is said his insurance policy expired today.
