De- Militarisation of the Police
•Hie Police -Force Bill, which has now practically passed both Houses, will effect a very; desirable change in the constitution of the Service to which it relates. It deprives it of the semimiiitary charicter it has -enjoyed as a branch of the Armed Constabulary, a id* makes it a -purely civil police force, the functions of whijh will be simply, to preserve the . peace, the defence of the. colony being left .to: a properly organised 1 permanent military'body. This is a very useful change, 'and will undoubtedly conduce t* the greater efncienby bf both of the bodies-; concerned.' ' The *• Civil Police we suppose, be-transferred from control of the Defence Department to that of the' : Justice Department, to -which it hioro property belongs This : *will v enable ! . reforms to . be ef■fected fotHem^ tbe police v The alteration is one which has long been* desired by the public; and we are glad* that' it -is^.at length to be made. — Post.
