The Old Song
We notice that the Christeburch Press is getting up the old cry against the honoraria paid to members of the House. It says : — "lt is high time that members were made to understand that the public do net consider their services worth what they help themselves to out of the Colonial Exchequer. Two hundred guineas is just about double what is necessary to pay expenses. It is not enough to compensate a professional man, or farmer, or merchant for his loss of time, and it iB not meant to compensate him. It is only intended to pay the cost of his living during the session in the same degree of comfort in which ordinary people live. As a matter of fact, nine out of ten members live during session in a style which they would never dream of living in when at home." This is sheer nonsense, talked on a subject which we thought had been thrashed out long ago.
